A project is launched in Chile to mark the 80th anniversary of Gabriela Mistral’s Nobel Prize

Santiago de Chile, December 10 (EFE).- With several free activities in different cities, Chile began this Tuesday the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Nobel Prize for Literature of the poet Gabriela Mistral, the first and only Latin American woman to receive the recognition this one

From the University of Chile, which was her home of study, where she received the Honoris Causa award and her funeral was held, the opening of the ‘G80 Day: Las Huellas de la Gabriela’ project was announced, a kind of countdown to commemorate the award given to the teacher and educator in Stockholm, Sweden, on the 10 In December 1945.

The project includes interventions in the public space with works of art, a cycle of podcasts to publicize Mistral’s life and work and a search for 80 performers and 80 writers who embody the poet and a dialogue with her writings.

Specifically, in the ‘G80 Day’ theater, contemporary dance, experimental music, visual art and poetry come together, “to create an immersive and innovative experience,” according to what was announced by the university.

This effort aims to highlight Mistral’s cultural, political and artistic heritage, highlight his avant-garde proposals and bring his work closer to new generations.

Mistral, who died on January 10, 1957 at the age of 68, defended the education of all children, regardless of gender or the community to which they belonged.

Education being one of the core of her political vocation, Mistral led the literacy of the peasant and indigenous communities in the rural areas of Mexico, a country where she was invited to participate in the educational reform in the early 1920s, gave lectures on pedagogy, and promoted the reading of classical writers.

In addition to her prolific literary work, Mistral expressed multiple social, political and ideological concerns in her writings, presenting various profiles of influential figures of her time, outlining positions on women’s organization and labor, as well as women’s suffrage and human rights. EFE
